The Golgi apparatus is analogous to the finishing and packing room in a factory. Once the ribosome finishes manufacturing a protein in the rough ER, the protein needs to be prepared for use or export. Special enzymes will trim off any extra amino acids, and then the unfinished protein moves through channels in the smooth ER.

  • Golgi apparatus is responsible for manufacturing, warehousing and shipping certain cellular products, particularly those from endoplasmic reticulum
  • It composed of flat sacs that are stacked. Each stacked grouping has a membrane that separates the inside from the cell's cytosol.
  • It is very polar. The membrane at one end of the stack differ in both composition and in thickness from those at the other end.
  • One end acts as the "receiving" department and the other as the"shipping" departmnet. The receiving department is closely associated with the endoplasmic reticulum. The shipping side produces vesicles that "ship" materials to other sites.
  • The golgi apparatus modifies many products including protein and phospholipids. A complex can also manufacture certain types of macromolecules. One such example is hyaluranic acid which is a form of cellular glue
